Gorillaz deelt “The Book of Russel”, samenwerking met Jaguar en meer

Heel veel Gorillaz nieuws! Met de opvolger van het album The Fall uit 2011 in de stijgers, doet het team achter band er alles aan om te laten zien dat de act weer leeft.

Allereerst is auto-merk Jaguar de samenwerking met Gorillaz aangegaan. Visueel meesterbrein achter de band, Jamie Hewlett, heeft een reclamefilmpje geregisseerd waarin de cartoon gitariste Noodle een raceauto bestuurt. Het merk heeft Noodle aangewezen als ambassadeur van Jaguar om een nieuwe lijn elektrische raceauto’s te promoten.

Het doel van de campagne is om jonge vrouwen te interesseren in het ontwerpen van elektrische auto’s. In een gerelateerd statement zegt Noodle het volgende: “The young minds of today are the engineers of tomorrow. We are in the driving seat and our imaginations are the fuel. It’s time to lead the charge and build a better world!”

Ten tweede heeft het achtergrond verhaal van drummer Russel een update gekregen. Na “The Book of Noodle” is nu ook “The Book of Russel” op Gorillaz’ Instagram en Twitter verschenen.

Net zoals de Noodle variant, is het verhaal achter Russel voorzien van artwork en geluidsfragmentjes. De band lijkt terug gekomen op de beslissing om de verhalen slechts voor een beperkte tijd beschikbaar te stellen. Beide boeken staan nog altijd op de sociale media pagina’s van de band. SPOILERS- Russel is onderweg naar Plastic Beach 60 keer groter geworden, na het eten van vervuilde garnalen. Tijdens de aanval op Plastic Beach probeerde de drummer Noodle in veiligheid te brengen, maar werd vlakbij de Japanse kust aangevallen door walvisjagers. Gewond en verward spoelde Russel aan in Noord-Korea, waar hij werd gevangen en tentoongesteld. Vanwege voedselschaarste kromp Russel terug naar zijn gebruikelijke formaat, waarna hij werd vrijgelaten en terug werd gestuurd naar Engeland.

Die zelfde cartoon drummer Russel zou een interview met PUSS PUSS Magazine gedaan hebben. Zo worden o.a. Russels favoriete rappers (Biggie, MF DOOM en Earl Sweatshirt), favoriete katten rassen (Devon Rex) en de toekomst voor Gorillaz besproken besproken:

“You can expect whatever you like. What is coming will come, whether you expect it or not.

“What’s important isn’t what’s happening next, but what’s happening right now. That’s all you can control. And listen, me and Gorillaz – that’s two separate things. Our paths entwine, then separate – like a messed-up pretzel.”

De release voor het nog titelloze vijfde Gorillaz album staat gepland voor 2017.

“Russel Hobbs had always put on weight easily, so when he grew sixty times in size swimming to Plastic Beach, he thought it might be his thyroid. Noodle, riding on his back the whole way, guessed it was more likely the six tons of polluted shrimp he swallowed en route.

Russel had found Murdoc, but like a circumcision ceremony their reunion was cruelly cut short. Pirates attacked from all sides, so Russel cradled Noodle inside his giant mouth and swam away.

“Their trouble, however, was just beginning. Somewhere off the coast of Japan, Russel was mistaken for a whale and harpooned. He managed to wriggle free, but in the fracas Noodle was swept away into the blood-red waters.

“Wounded and delirious, Russel struggled on through the ocean feebly humming the power ballad ‘All By Myself’ until he lost consciousness. Eventually, he drifted into the warm waters of the Yellow Sea, and washed up on a North Korean beach.

“Giant Russel was carted to Pyongyang, where he was exhibited like a modern day Gulliver. The regime’s Glorious Leader declared that he’d captured Pulgasari, the legendary North Korean Godzilla. Russel became the country’s biggest attraction, and ‘I survived Pulgasari’ t-shirts became the nation’s fastest selling fashion item. Or would have done if people were allowed to sell anything other than manure and tanks.

“In time, the North’s meagre food rations caused Russel to shrink back to normal size. Realising Russel was just a man, the Glorious Leader proclaimed that he’d personally defeated Pulgasari, and Russel was released. He was given a signed pressing of Kim Sings Sinatra, and sent back to England, where he wandered the streets of London, until musician and Gorillaz collaborator Jeff Wootton let him crash on his futon.

“A few days later, Jeff’s phone rang – it was Murdoc. Without delay, Russel moved into Murdoc’s new West London home.

The band was getting back together”
