SWMRS kwam onlangs met All Time Low naar Nederland voor een show in de Melkweg te Amsterdam. Vlak voor de show spraken we met Max en Cole Becker, die ons meer vertelden over hun geschiedenis, het laatste album Drive North, hun shows en de opkomende tour met Blink-182.

1. De band werd opgericht na het kijken van de film ‘School Of Rock’.

Joey Armstrong en Cole Becker waren zo’n 10 jaar oud toen ze in 2004 de film ‘School Of Rock’ keken en dachten “Dit is cool, dit moeten wij ook doen.“ Zo gezegd, zo gedaan. De jongens startten een band, schreven hun eigen liedjes en maakten de formatie compleet met Cole’s broertje Max op basgitaar en Travis Neumann op gitaar. Pakte het ook uit zoals ze verwachtten?

“When we started, I thought it was going to be like a huge battle of the bands – like in ‘School Of Rock’. I thought there’d be as much people going to those things in real life as they did in that movie, which is not true. We played a battle of the bands in front of about 30 people, so yeah… Not the same,” lacht Cole.

2. SWMRS heeft evenveel bandnamen als bandleden gehad.

In 2014 verliet Travis de band en nam huidige gitarist Seb Mueller zijn plaats in. Dat brengt ons op een totaal van vijf al dan niet voormalige bandleden. En als je een band begint op je tiende, is het te verwachten dat je de toen gekozen naam zo’n 13 jaar later niet meer helemaal ziet zitten. Zo ook in het geval van SWMRS, dat ooit begon als The Raining Souls. Nog datzelfde jaar veranderde dat in The Clocks, maar dat was toch iets te algemeen. Later kozen ze voor Emily’s Army, en daar bleven ze jaren bij. “We were called Emily’s Army because of our cousin, who had cystic fibrosis, and that was her foundation’s name. We figured that by taking the name, we could raise awareness and make music at the same time,” legt Max uit.

“When we became 18, 19, we decided we didn’t want to be labelled as a kid pop punk band anymore, so we decided to change our name to Swimmers and now, we’re SWMRS,” gaat hij verder. “We wanted to start with a clean slate, and it was just the greatest move. We are our own thing now.”

3. Familie speelt een grote rol bij SWMRS.

Zoals de naam Emily’s Army al deed vermoeden, is de band heel hecht met hun familie. Bovendien zijn Max en Cole broers, en hoewel dat niet in alle gevallen goed gaat, levert het bij SWMRS geen problemen op. “We’re lucky we’re close enough and we know how to communicate,” reflecteert Cole op de afgelopen jaren. “It’s not like Oasis, where we’re going to end up hating each other, but there’s definitely a sort of rivalry between us because we’re brothers.”

“We both write the songs, we both sing… and we’ve only recently learned how to write songs together. It’s way cooler. It’s opened up a whole new world for us. It’s fun. If we started out right now, though, I wouldn’t know how well that would go, because we’re so different. But we grew up doing the band together, so it works.”

Daarnaast oefent ook de familie van drummer Joey invloed uit op hun muziek. Zijn vader is namelijk de frontman van Green Day en heeft ook de eerste twee albums van de band geproduceerd.

“We started this band and one of the biggest rock stars in the world was like ‘Oh, do you need any advice? I’m right here!’ And we were like ‘Alright, that’s cool’,” vertelt Cole. “Sometimes we wouldn’t want it, though, because we were just annoying kids and it’s like your friend’s dad first, before he’s some famous guy. He’s basically like our uncle, we’re really close. We think of him more as like another male figure in our lives, essentially. He is very supportive.”

4. Met ‘Drive North’ probeert de band je stimuleren voor jezelf na te denken.

Toen ze de nummers schreven probeerden ze niet te focussen op een bepaald thema, zo vertelt Cole. “We didn’t try to, but a lot of the songs just ended up being about learning how to think for yourself and really taking your world into your own hands.”

“Yeah, and to be proud of where you’re from. Because a lot of people, especially teenagers, are like ‘Ugh, I want to get out of this town’ and all that stuff. It’s really just about taking a look around and appreciating what you have,” vult Max aan.

5. Een SWMRS show klinkt misschien niet altijd perfect, maar is wel altijd echt.

Vergeet zwaarbeladen backing tracks en andere versiersels, wanneer SWMRS op het podium staat hoor je enkel vier mensen en hun instrumenten. “We’re going to make you move. You’re going to be engaged. You know, it might not always sound perfect, but it will always sound real. All the sound is going to be coming from the four of us and nothing else,” beweert Cole.

“It’ll sound pretty close to perfect, though,” verzekert Max ons lachend. “Expect to be a part of something bigger than yourself. Expect to realise that rock ’n roll is not dead.”

6. De band is al bezig met een nieuw album.

De broers hebben dus pas recentelijk samen liedjes leren schrijven. Is dat iets dat ze vaker willen doen? “We only wrote the song ‘Palm Trees’ together. That one’s a recent release. It wasn’t on ‘Drive North’ initially, but we released a new version of the album with two new songs on it after we signed with Fueled By Ramen,” aldus Max.

Dit belooft wat voor het volgende album. “The writing for ‘Palm Trees’ turned out to be really collaborative, which was pretty cool. And now we’re writing songs for the new album, we already have stuff that we’re both sitting on and we’re going back and forth like the Beastie Boys. It’s exciting.”

7. SWMRS zou graag eens samenwerken met een hiphop artiest.

Max ziet een samenwerking met een rapper wel zitten. “I think it would be cool for SWMRS to write an instrumental chorus into one of our songs and have a hiphop artist or a rapper doing a verse. So maybe like Kendrick, or-“

“I think it’d be really cool with Run The Jewels, they’re like a punk rap group,” valt zijn broer hem in de rede.

“Yeah, that’d be cool! Or maybe Anderson .Paak, he seems like a really creative dude. Or Stormzy, or Skepta… It would be awesome to work with some grime artists, because there’s somewhat of an overlap with the attitude of rap and the attitude of true rock. It’s about the soul and the feeling. It doesn’t matter how you do it, but if you can give someone that feeling, you got me.”

8. Ze gaan binnenkort op tour met Blink-182.

SWMRS mag een aantal shows van Blink-182 met A Day To Remember openen, waaronder die in Rotterdam. “Blink-182…” begint Max dromerig. “We’re so excited to go on tour with them. The songs of Blink-182 are historic. You can’t really beat ‘First Date’, you just can’t. Or ‘Dammit’, or ‘Rock Show’, or ‘What’s My Age Again’… They’re classic songs that just remind me of summer time.”

“Everybody has a memory to ‘What’s My Age Again’. I remember sitting in the car, we were on a road trip, and my sister was like ‘Play ‘What’s My Age Again’!’ She was older, so she was really into Blink-182. Max and I were really little, and I just remember thinking ‘Oh my god, wait… ‘She took off my pants’? And what’s sodomy? Why does the state look down on sodomy?” lacht Cole.

“It’s all pretty cool. We never expected all of this when we started out, but we definitely wanted it.”
