Ruim drie jaar na zijn eerste soloalbum, komt voormalig Reuben-frontman Jamie Lenman terug met nieuwe muziek. Op een enkele samenwerking, waaronder dat nummer met Black Peaks, en een optreden op het Engelse 2000 Trees Festival afgelopen zomer na, bleef het de afgelopen tijd vrij stil rondom de muzikant.

Gisteren werd deze stilte verbroken met een social media update, die vanochtend werd opgevolgd door een korte teaser voor een nieuw nummer getiteld ‘Mississippi’. De single verschijnt op maandag 23 januari in zijn geheel en lijkt onderdeel te zijn van een grotere release, de opvolger van het in 2013 verschenen Muscle Memory. Check de teaser hieronder.

Jamie vertelde dat hij zijn producer Space al jaren kent, maar dat de twee nooit eerder het idee hadden de handen ineen te slaan. “I’m over the moon with the results. I came up with the basic idea when I was writing the last record but it fell between the two pillars of ultra heavy and super soft that I was going for, so I put it to the back of my mind and dug it out again when that was all over.

“Lyrically the song is about all the bad thoughts and feelings a person carries round with them and tries to cover up on a day to day basis, but if I get that little ‘Mississippi’ mantra in my head, which is a song my Dad used to sing, it brings them all back up. Watching him die is just one of these thoughts I can’t get rid of but the phrase acts as a symbol for all of it.

“This song and the new material in general is a bringing back together of the cores of how I write songs, the riff and the melody. On ‘Muscle Memory’ I separated them out and it was fun to experiment but it wasn’t how I naturally do things – now I’ve got back into that but with an added feel for rhythms and digital elements which Space is so good at.”
