Mark Hoppus van Blink-182 heeft gereageerd op het incident in Oakland waarbij zeker 33 mensen zijn omgekomen nadat er brand ontstond tijdens een rave in een oud pakhuis en het dak instortte. Hij vertelde TMZ dat het vreselijk is dat dit heeft kunnen gebeuren, veiligheid is immers de prioriteit. “When you put on shows, or when you are part of a show, you’ve got to make sure people are going to be safe. The fans, the people there, the bands, the people putting on the show – everyone’s got to make sure that people stay safe, that’s priority number one.”

Als Hoppus terugkijkt op de begintijd van Blink-182, denkt hij dat de veiligheid bij hun shows ook niet altijd geweest is wat het had moeten zijn. “Sadly, when we were first starting off, I don’t think that we even thought about stuff like that. There’s been way too many tragedies like this and I think that now people hopefully are a lot smarter and when they put on a show – they think about things like this.”

De muzikant is echter niet van mening dat beginnende bands het underground circuit uit voorzorg beter kunnen skippen. “I think there’s a lot to be said for the underground, I just think that when you put on a show you’ve got to make sure that you do it the right way.”
