Na diverse geruchten en aftel machines vond gisteren avond (31 mei) het live-debuut van Prophets of Rage plaats. De groep bestaande uit driekwart van Rage Against the Machine, Chuck D van Public Enemy en B-Real van Cypress Hill, gaf hun eerste en mogelijk enige optreden in The Whiskey A Go Go in Los Angeles.

De pers aankondiging geeft aan dat gevaarlijke tijden om gevaarlijke maatregelen vragen, met een duidelijke verwijzing naar Amerikaanse presidentskandidaat Donald Trump:

“Prophets of Rage combines the sonic firepower of Rage Against The Machine, Public Enemy and Cypress Hill. We can no longer stand on the sidelines of history. Dangerous times demand dangerous songs. It’s time to take the power back. It’s time to make America RAGE again.”

In een interview met Rolling Stone onderbouwt gitarist Tom Morello deze reden tot actie:

“We’re not a supergroup. We’re an elite task force of revolutionary musicians determined to confront this mountain of election year bullshit, and confront it head-on with Marshall stacks blazing.”

De volledige opbrengst van het optreden gaat naar daklozenorganisatie P.A.T.H. (People Assisting The Homeless). Prophets of Rage heeft op het moment nog geen plannen voor een tweede optreden.

Ondertussen is de reden ontbrekende factor, Rage Against the Machine frontman Zack de la Rocha, bekend gemaakt. RATM drummer Brad Wilk geeft in dat zelfde interview met Rolling Stone aan dat De la Rocha te druk bezig is met een solo album. Dit wordt bevestigd door bassist Tim Commerford. De bassist heeft met Zack over het project gesproken, waarna de zanger en rapper voor het aanbod bedankte maar zijn bandmaatjes veel succes wenste:

“I spoke to Zack and got his blessing, and that’s really great. We’re a family and there’s support across the board. I support him and everything he does, and vice versa. I’ve definitely been keeping him in the know. You’re never going to replace Zack, and we aren’t trying to do that. He’s a unique artist and showman. It’s going to take people that I know he looks up to and that he idolizes and that he’s inspired by. We’re going to plug them in and see what they can do with these songs, because at the end of the day it’s all about the songs. The songs are needed right now, they really are. This is gonna be some cool shit.”
