Onlangs werd in de Amerikaanse staat North-Carolina de House Bill 2 wet ingevoerd. Deze wet verplicht de inwoners van de staat om gebruik te maken van de toiletten wat overeenkomt met hun bij geboorte toegewezen geslacht, waardoor transgender mensen in het nauw gedreven worden. Verschillende artiesten, waaronder de frontvrouw van Against Me!, hebben hier op hun eigen manier op gereageerd.

Zowel Bruce Springsteen als voormalig Beatle Ringo Starr hebben uit protest de optredens in North-Carolina geannuleerd. Starr zei zijn optreden in juni af met het volgende statement: “I’m sorry to disappoint my fans in the area, but we need to take a stand against this hatred. Spread peace and love.”

Andere artiesten, waaronder Cyndi Lauper en Mumford and Sons, hebben geen shows in de staat geannuleerd, maar aangekondigd dat de opbrengst van optredens in North-Carolina aan lokale LGBT-gemeenschappen gedoneerd zal worden. Lauper geeft tegen ABC News aan dat ze publiekelijk steun aan de transgender-gemeenschap wil betuigen:

“I will be donating all of the profits from the show to Equality North Carolina’s efforts to repeal HB2 and I am proud of my manager and agent for joining me in this effort by donating their commissions from the show to this vital effort. I look forward to coming to North Carolina and standing up for equality and fairness. If we truly want an inclusive society, we all have to include ourselves in the effort to make that happen. This is the best way I know how to include myself and urge you to join me in the best way you know how.”

Laura Jane Grace, de frontvrouw van Against Me! heeft aangegeven uit protest juist wel in North-Carolina op te treden. De zangeres en transgender icoon heeft aangegeven dat ze blij is met de support van Springsteen en anderen, maar legt uit dat het voor haar als onderdeel van de LGBT-gemeenschap geen optie is om de show af te zeggen, ten behoeve van zichtbaarheid van trans mensen (via BuzzFeed):

“I think the real danger with HB2 is that it creates a target on transgender people specifically. When you feel targeted as a trans person, the natural inclination is to go into hiding. But visibility is more important than ever; to go there and have the platform of a stage to stand on and speak your mind and represent yourself. An attack by a transgender person against another person in a bathroom has never been documented There are more incidents of straight senators having issues in bathrooms than transgender people.”
