In een gesprek met BBC Radio 6 heeft Kevin Parker van Tame Impala aangegeven dat het een onbegonnen zaak is, het illegale downloaden een halt toe te roepen. “Ik zeg niet dat muziek gratis moet zijn, maar dat als mensen iets gratis kunnen krijgen, er niets is wat we kunnen doen om ze te stoppen” aldus Parker.

Tevens praat hij over zijn eigen geschiedenis wat betreft het verkrijgen van muziek en geeft de zanger aan zelf ook gratis te downloaden:

“There are some CDs I saved up for months to buy when I was doing a paper round, I’d literally spend two months saving up to buy a CD. But then later in life my friend would burn me a CD that he’d downloaded illegally and it was just as much of a powerful experience, even though the sound quality was kind of crappy. For me, it just shows that it’s not really about how much you pay for it or even whether or not it’s physical—it can still have the same effect on you. (…)”

“I used to download music illegally. Everyone has. No one is innocent. Everyone has done that. If someone says, ‘Hey man, I love your album, it really got me through a breakup, but I downloaded it for free,’ I’ll be like, ‘Good! That’s good!’ Maybe he didn’t have the money for the album, but if he still listened to it and it’s an important part of his life, that’s all I can ask for. I don’t want his twenty bucks.”

Verder vertelt Parker dat er zat andere manieren zijn om in de muziekbusiness geld te verdienen, bijvoorbeeld met advertienties, of als soundtrack in een film:

“There are other ways to get money in music, like an ad for a car or phone company. (…) Then it just means that the corporations are paying for it, and they’re the ones with the money. I guess I’m not saying that I think music should be free, but I do think that if people can get it for free, there’s nothing anyone can do to stop them,“
